Inglese in musica – Life on Mars

Il 10 gennaio 2016, due giorni dopo l’uscita del suo ultimo album e del suo sessantanovesimo compleanno, moriva David Bowie, uno dei personaggi più eccentrici della storia della musica.  Il primo appuntamento dell’anno della nostra rubrica “Inglese in musica” è dedicato proprio al “Duca Bianco”.

Dai suoi esordi fino alla fine, Bowie si è contraddistinto per il suo stile eclettico e la sua voglia di sperimentare sempre nuovi suoni e look, divenendo nel tempo una vera e propria icona di musica e stile -indimenticabile il suo Ziggy Stardust!

Se il vostro obiettivo è imparare l’inglese, ascoltare le canzoni di Bowie è molto utile per ampliare il vocabolario, migliorare la propria pronuncia e ovviamente le proprie capacità di ascolto. Tra tutti i suoi intramontabili successi abbiamo scelto di analizzare “Life on Mars”, una delle canzoni simbolo di Bowie.

Sapevate che…

1) La canzone doveva essere l’adattamento inglese del successo francese “Comme d’habitude” e il titolo pensato era “Even a fool lears to love”. Tuttavia, il testo scritto da Bowie non era adatto alla metrica originale della canzone e quindi non fu approvato, e i diritti della canzone furono acquisiti da Paul Anka che realizzò il successo “My Way”, reso celebre da Frank Sinatra.

2) Il pianoforte è suonato da Rick Wakerman, che per anni è stato il tastierista del gruppo “YES”, e ha avuto un ruolo importante nella realizzazione della canzone, in quanto mentre Bowie lavorava alla stesura del testo, Wakerman sperimentava diversi accordi e proprio uno di questi rimase nella testa del cantante:

“ I took a walk to Beckenham High Street to catch a bus to Lewisham to buy shoes and shirts but couldn’t get the riff out of my head. Jumped off two stops into the ride and more or less loped back to the house up on Southend Road. Workspace was a big empty room with a chaise lounge; a bargain-price art nouveau screen (‘William Morris,’ so I told anyone who asked); a huge overflowing freestanding ashtray and a grand piano. Little else. I started working it out on the piano and had the whole lyric and melody finished by late afternoon. Nice.”

3) Questa canzone è stata rilasciata come singolo nel 1973, due anni dopo essere apparsa all’interno dell’album Hunky Dory.

4) Se si ascolta attentamente la fine della registrazione originale, è possibile udire un telefono squillare

5) Il front man dei Green day, Billie Joe Armstrong, ha dichiarato che vuole che questa canzone venga suonata al suo funerale.

In questa canzone Bowie parla sostanzialmente di una ragazza che utilizza i mezzi di comunicazione per evadere dalla realtà. Va al cinema per nascondersi e si sente persa quando non può ricorrere alle immagini dello schermo, lo stesso Bowie ha spiegato:

“I think she finds herself disappointed with reality… that although she’s living in the doldrums of reality, she’s being told that there’s a far greater life somewhere, and she’s bitterly disappointed that she doesn’t have access to it.”
